Hello I just wanted to say I really like the Unpacking video game series a lot and was wondering if videos can be done for the Japanese language learning video games Wagotabi and Shujinkou? And maybe make it a Comprehensible Input for Complete Beginners and/or Beginners video?
Demo for Shujinkou is out right now.
Wagotabi is not out yet on steam, but it is out in the app store!
Thank you for these suggestions! Yuki先生 will check them out .
Do you know if Wagotabi is able to be played in 100% Japanese? I watched the trailer video, and it looks like Duolingo with more exciting gameplay. It would be best if it were able to be played in 100% Japanese. If it’s only Japanese<->English, then we probably wouldn’t do it. I think the demo is available on Steam to check out
For Shujinkou, idk maybe. I see that it has potential for some good videos. The same would apply to this video, though, where it’s important that it can be played in 100% Japanese.
Wagotabi gets players into full immersion (98%-99% Japanese only) within an hour of the game so I think it would be really worth doing.
They teach Japanese very different than any other Japanese language learning video game/app out there. They intro some kana and immediately it gets turned into a sentence. So by the time a player has played just 1 hour of the game they are 98-99% of the time seeing Japanese only.
You can look at Game Gengo’s playthrough of the game here.
For Shujinkou you can try setting the language settings to fluent, so you can try that for the demo and see what happens.
Thanks for sharing that video! It seems like there’s still a lot of JP<->EN, though. We also tend not to focus on direct grammar instruction, so it’s probably going to be a no for that Wagotabi, but I’ll see what Yuki thinks.
For Shujinkou, it doesn’t seem like you can turn off the English even when setting the language level to Fluent, so we probably won’t be doing that game either.
Thank you for your suggestions! I downloaded the demos and gave them a try.
It seems their primary language is English. For Wagotabi, there’s no “Japanese” option in the language settings, and for 主人公, the dialogues are still in English even when I select “fluent” and “日本語”
Thank you for sharing the video as well. I watched it, but it seems that there’s lots of English translations, and it focuses more on teaching grammar, which doesn’t quite align with our teaching approach.
I decided I won’t be playing them for our videos🙏 Thanks again for your suggestions!
