Progress Level Tracking

Hi everyone. This has probably been asked before, but are there any plans to implement a learning level for this site, which increases the more hours spent watching videos? It doesn’t necessary need to align with any particular certification levels, it would just be nice to see my level increasing as I cross the 100 hour mark, 300 hour mark etc. Dreaming French was launched this week, and I noticed there they do utilize such a level system for ranking up and was wondering if something similar would be possible here, as the website is already tracking our hours.

It may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I know that I would find it deeply motivating, and it would help me to stay on track when my ADHD kicks in and I am struggling to bring myself to watch more videos. It makes me think of grinding out matches 10 hours per day as a kid on Call of Duty, just to see my prestige level increase.

Let me know if this is something that you’ve already considered - I am curious

Hi Archer!

We had originally planned on having user levels with a new granted level every 10 hours (so more linear like WaniKani’s levels). After a while, it kinda slipped off features list, though. If a lot of support is shown for this, we would reconsider adding this :slightly_smiling_face:

I like having no levels. Hours track what I’ve done. Levels that are just a factor of that don’t seem to add much, and it’s one more thing for me to worry/stress about?

Not everybody’s brain works the same, so I understand that not everybody will find them as motivating as I would. Though I am not sure I follow why they’d add a level of stress :joy: but I certainly don’t want to be the cause of that!

I don’t know if implementing something similar to Wanikani would have the desired effect, and it isn’t quite what I meant. I’ve just reread the guide, and see that it now gives guidance as to roughly how many hours are needed for each level (50-75 for super beginner, 150-250 for beginner and 600-750 for intermediate). I don’t remember seeing this before (and probably wouldn’t have posted this had I realized :joy:) and it’s great to have that guidance.

What I was proposing is more like a progress bar counting up to those levels, so that I can visualize my progress and use that for motivation. Of course, we already have the total number of hours studied being counted, so maybe that is sufficient for most people now that we have a target to aim for.

Edit: added a screenshot of what I mean, for clarity.

I agree. I also would love to see this feature, as it’s a big motivator for me. Almost like a game. Like, oh, just a little bit more, and I get to the next level!

Exactly! Tracking the hours is great, but seeing that progress bar fill is a huge motivation boost for me too. And would encourage me to watch more videos at those moment when I don’t really feel like it.

Exactly! Also, I’m a very visual person, so I like being able to visualize my progress in that way.
