If you are here, I imagine you know this channel already, but if not, please check out this channel.
This guy creates super comprehensible material using drawings and anime but tends to explain things more in depth. Occasional single words of english are thrown in to clarify something potentially confusing to the learner.
I have tried this guy´s videos which are titled “Complete beginners” and as a complete beginner, I do not understand them at all. It is something about the cadence of words or the way how he points to drawings or maybe it does not match correctly, I do not know what was it, but I just quit after first video.
I am still subscribed to his channel and planning to get back later for his manga readings, but for me, the videos here are way way easier to comprehend.
I completely get that! If it’s a speed thing, have you tried slowing to 75% normal speed? I have found on CIJ that when doing that it doesnt distort the sound so much that it’s irritating or distracting, but it just gives your brain a bit more time to process and comprehend.
One way you can gain a lift up in comprehension is to watch first with english subtitles (so you have a general idea what is being discuseed and when) and then after that without the subtitles engaged each time after that. Its not pure CI only theory, but as a beginner it can help and prevent from becoming discouraged.
On the other hand, we all comprehend differently and at different rates. Good luck!!!
I am not easily discouraged I watch anime in japanese all the time, which I do not understand at all. Sometimes I rewatch seasons that I watched longer time ago after a new season is out. Just to refresh my memory. But generally, I do not like to rewatch stuff.
Also, English is not my first language so even watching with English subtitles is somewhat discouraging.
To make myself clear, I am not saying that what he is doing is bad or even mid. It takes a lot of effort and hats off to him for doing it. Especially if he is not native. But I genuinly believe that what is presented here on CIJ is a level above. And maybe even a level of its own if compared to whatever I came across so far. For beginners, I mean.
As far as I can see, the recommended YouTuber is from Poland. He is not a native Japanese speaker. In one video, he says “ikimaseng” instead of “ikimasen”. It’s just a small thing, but I’d rather learn from native speakers.
