Should I say the words out loud when watching CIJapanese?

Or should I stay quiet and watch and observe.

Thanks.

Hi @paul_wolf!

It depends on what your goals are. Are you in a class that has speaking, or are you trying to start speaking? If so, then sure. Otherwise, I’d recommend just listening.

If you have no reason to practice speaking yet, then I wouldn’t start. There’s reason to suggest that forcing yourself to speak is harmful, and that your brain will start forming output automatically after its received enough input (similar to how children will listen for two years before actually speaking sentences).

If you are practicing speaking, then “shadowing” is a good technique. It’s where you say the words directly after the speaker to mimic their voice, and it’s a good technique for improving your pronunciation.

I’ve studied Japanese From Zero text book 1.
I’ve done half of Jlab’s beginner Anki course plus a little bit more extra Anki.

I will do this shadowing technique for words that I’m not familiar with.

So far I’m understanding at least 80% to 90% of the Complete Beginner videos.

Should I watch all of the Complete Beginner videos first before reading and listening?

It’s up to you what you want to do. It wouldn’t hurt to start reading or listening, especially since you understand 80-90% of the Complete Beginner videos.

When you read, just make sure to do so with the audio playing along, like on the Read page of the website (maybe this is what you meant by “reading and listening”).

Also, feel free to start to watching some Beginner videos. You can select both Complete Beginner and Beginner from the “Levels” filter. I recommend doing that to start exposing yourself to the next level.
